Home Office Advice from Foxlane Homes

We know how hard it can be to separate work from home when you are working remotely or homeschooling. It is very important to have designated spaces for work in your home so you can try and attain a work-life balance. Setting aside a special place to do work will also increase productivity. The question is, how do you find the space to set aside and, when you find the space, how do you make it functional for your family? Today we’re bringing you some creative design ideas to turn any area of your home into a work or school space.

1. Create a closet office

You have probably heard of mini studio spaces or she sheds. This design idea follows a similar concept: turning a small space into a meaningful space. Many of our Foxlane Homes floorplans include big walk-in closets with windows. To create a quiet office that is set aside, all you need to do is shift some clothes around and add a desk and chair. Call it your closet cubicle, add a fun desk lamp, framed family photos or inspirational quotes and perhaps even layer a rug to make it feel like an authentic work space. Pro tip: post your office hours on the door to keep out unwanted co-workers big and small.

2. Flip a formal space

We have multiple homes that include a formal living room, study or den space. It would be very simple to flip these spaces into an office or even classroom for homeschooling. Switch out the couches and coffee tables for desks and filing cabinets and hang some white boards on the walls to create an awesome work or school space.

 

3. Love your loft space

Some people work better in a space that isn’t necessarily set apart. For these people, we recommend setting up shop in a public place in your home that receives more traffic. Our suggestion? Converting a loft or open stair landing into your office space. This option is also ideal for homeschooling as the open space allows you to keep your eyes and ears on your students from different places in your home. No one will feel restricted in this open, airy and bright space.

 

4. Utilize your covered porch

This workspace idea is for the person that really loves being outdoors! Every Foxlane Home has incredible outdoor living spaces, which we think can be a perfect temporary work space on a nice day. We recommend setting up a comfortable outdoor table and chair, and even an outdoor fan on warmer days, so that at any time you can pick up your work and take it outside. It’s always nice to change up your scenery when working remotely. Sometimes a change in view or a little bit of Vitamin D is all you need to be energized!

 

5. Bonus space: the basement
