Whether you’re a native or new to the area, there’s always something fun for kids to do in Steel City! Here are some of our favorite kid-friendly places and activities.
1. Carnegie Science Center
At the top of our list is Carnegie Science Center. And it’s no surprise why: Pittsburgh’s most-visited museum features four floors of interactive exhibits for kids and adults alike. Make a day of it and explore the solar system, human body, robots — even a submarine. You won’t want to miss an extra special exhibit running now until September 4th: VIKINGS: Warriors of the North Sea. Discover over 140 authentic Viking artifacts (including a real Viking ship) and gain a complete image of Vikings as you enter the unique and fascinating world of The Vikings Age.
2. Molly’s Trolleys
Step aboard a vintage-style trolley and experience Pittsburgh in a one-of-a-kind way with a guided tour! For 25 years, Molly’s Trolleys has been conducting fun, historical tours of Steel City. These 90-minute tours will show you all of the city’s most popular sights and the stories behind its quirky culture. Your kids or grandkids will love traveling to popular areas of the city including Downtown, the North Shore, and Mt. Washington. Plus, each public tour also includes a ride on the Duquesne Incline cable railway. Tours are offered daily with reservations at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
3. Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh
Kids of all ages will have fun sparking creativity and imagination at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. This multilevel museum features rotating exhibits, workshops, camps, and events, which means there’s always something exciting to do and explore. One can’t-miss exhibit? Opposites Abstract, a new exhibit based on the exploration of opposites in best-selling children’s book author/illustrator Mo Willems’ new book.
4. Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium
For year-round fun, there’s no better place than the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. Here you’ll find special events, classes, camps, and more than 4,000 animals (including a newborn Western lowland gorilla!). Stop by the petting zoo in Kids Kingdom or the stingray tanks for some hands-on, family-friendly fun. And for something truly unforgettable, schedule a Wild Encounter: 30-minute private experiences that allow you and up to five guests to get up close and personal with some of your favorite zoo residents.
